Episode #2237 of The Joe Rogan Experience saw former U.S. Department of State official Mike Benz join Joe Rogan for a conversation. After his stint in the U.S Government, he has gone on to become the executive director of the Foundation For Freedom Online, which focuses on free speech.

Given Benz's position, the topic of free speech came up during his conversation with Rogan, with the pair going on to mention Elon Musk as well. The popular podcaster has long championed Musk as a paragon of free speech, and with Benz's desire to both protect and promote freedom of speech, the episode naturally progressed to a discussion on Musk.

Speaking on the manner in which governments weaponize social media, Benz said:

"NATO formally declared the tanks-to-tweets doctrine saying that the new role of NATO is no longer just about tanks, it's about controlling tweets. And then Brexit happened in June 2016, and July 2016, the very next month in Warsaw, NATO added hybrid warfare to its formal charter, basically authorizing the military, the diplomatic sphere and the intelligence world to take control over social media and then five months later, Trump won the election being called a Russian asset."

This led to Rogan remarking that the ideological direction of social media was dominated by censorship, at least until Musk's acquisition of X (formerly Twitter). The impact of Musk's actions were not lost on Benz, who added:

"No, that's exactly it. He's sort of the timeline where we missed the bullet. He's where there's a Deus-Ex Machina where it's this random plot thing that happens. You know, someone descends onto the stage and solves all the plots, loopholes and magically saves the plucky heroes that were otherwise in danger."

Musk's purchase of X/Twitter drew an extremely positive reception from many in the combat sports world. Some have even called for Musk to "save" Instagram, another popular social media platform.

Joe Rogan recently supported Elon Musk's interest in purchasing MSNBC

Recently, Donald Trump Jr. encouraged Elon Musk to purchase MSNBC, which has been put up for sale by Comcast. This drew Joe Rogan's attention, with the UFC commentator taking to X/Twitter to express an interest, albeit comedically, in assuming Rachel Maddow's role on The Rachel Maddow Show. Rogan replied

"If you buy MSNBC I would like Rachael [Rachel] Maddow's job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies."

As things stand, it's unclear if Musk is seriously interested in purchasing MSNBC.
